Rostelecom to connect Kuril Islands to high-speed Internet by Apr

MOSCOW, Feb 18 (PRIME) -- Russian state-controlled telecom operator Rostelecom plans to connect the Kuril Islands to high-speed Internet until April, President of the company Mikhail Oseyevsky told President of Russia Vladimir Putin at a meeting on Monday.

“We are actively working on the islands, we plan to complete connection of housing and social establishments, and business in the first quarter. This is surely very important for the people who live so far away from the center,” Oseyevsky said.

The program of the islands’ development for 2016–2025 stipulates construction of a 3.3 billion ruble underwater 940 kilometer fiber optic connection line between the island of Sakhalin and the Kurils.

The line will carry data at a speed of 40 gigabits per second.

Oseyevsky said that the connection line to the islands was built in 2018, and that services for households cost the same as on the island of Sakhalin.
